Reclaiming an Authority: Women’s Ulama Congress Network (KUPI) and a New Trend of Religious Discourse in Indonesia

The struggle of the Indonesian Women Ulama Congress Network (KUPI) to reclaim authority female ulama in Indonesia has facilitated emergence a new trend religious domain that traditionally been male-dominated and marginalized women. This paper aims explore three methods adopted by KUPI network women's socio-political recognition being an ulama. These include reconstructing concept ulama, developing alternative non-patriarchal gender-inclusive epistemology, issuing fatwas on strategic issues. Data for this study resulted from observations, interviews with ten (10) leading activists members network, readings publications its network. reveals reinterprets giving meanings terms definition, agency, roles. also criticizes existing epistemology enabled masculine domination patriarchal bias producing knowledge. develops interpreting texts contextually. It brings up true-justice perspective hermeneutics reciprocity. issued related major issues, including sexual violence, child marriage, ecological crisis. fatwa functions establish KUPI's position legitimacy par Council (MUI) symbolizes public Muslim clerical authority. recommends need more massive-quantitative map social acceptance women ulama's national international level.
